National Insurance Increase to Fund Social Care Reform

There have been reports in the media, both the Times and the Telegraph papers, that next week the Prime Minister will be annoucning an increase in National Insurance (NI) contributions.

The increase is said to be to fund the long awaited social care reform and to treat the NHS backlog that has built up during the pandemic. There is some speculation over the percentage rate, ranging from 1 percent to 2 percent, regardless of the fact that the 2019 Conservative manifesto pledged not to increase NI rates.
