An estimated 700,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia. The majority are over 65 and most have Alzheimer's. In less than 20 years the number is expected to rise to more than a million. It is a progressive illness. No-one knows the cause or why some people develop Alzheimer's and others do not. It affects the structure of the Brain causing a progressive decline in the ability to remember, understand, communicate and reason.
Currently Alzheimer's is the poor relation of medical funding. £300 per person is spent on cancer research but only £11 per person towards a cure for the 100 different types of dementia.
Roger Turner, General Secretary of N.F.O.P said, "If every member gave a pound this year it would have a life changing impact on many thousands of sufferers and their carers. Any donation however small will be welcome."
